Halfmoon Packing & Outfitting

Our Story

Who we are

“Halfmoon Packing & Outfitting is an equal opportunity provider/employer operating under permits from White River, Pike and San Isabel National Forests.” Anita was born in Indiana and moved to Colorado in 1981. She worked on a ranch in the Roaring Fork valley caring for cattle and sheep while training horses and mules. Hunting bear and mountain lion while on the ranch got her hooked on big game hunting and packing. She also guided elk and deer hunting in the fall. After leaving the ranch she helped many an outfitter in the Roaring Forks Valley come hunting season and guided point to point packtrips during the summer. She started Mega Mountain Magic with her husband Jake to share this love with others. Now that she has stepped down you may find her at the National Western Stockshow showing her mules Jane and Judy where they won the blue ribbon in 2008. Anita has not been without horses and mules since she was 6 years old. We like to tease Anita, saying that she has forgotten more than most people know.

Fishing Alpine Lakes

We offer both single and multi-day fishing trips into the Holy Cross Wilderness. There is nothing quite like combining a horseback ride with a day of fishing in a glacial lake near timberline. You will depart the stables for the trail head around 9:00 for the two-hour ride to West Tennessee Lakes. Experience the best lake fishing in Colorado with us and during the heat of the day, while the fishing are hiding in the shadows, you can enjoy stunning panoramic views while having lunch. You could go for a quick loop around the bowl on horseback.

Horse Camping Trips

Depending on the time of year, and your desires, we offer several all-day rides. Early season when there is still lots of snow we trailer to the Colorado Trail near West Tennessee Creek and follow its meandering path below the Continental Divide to the top of Tennessee Pass. From there the horses skirt Ski Cooper and return to the stables while passing thru 19th century mine sites. Later in the summer, when the retreating snow permits the ride will start just west of Turquoise Lake.Full Day Horseback Ride The trail will take you up through century old pine and spruce trees topping about above timberline with lunch alongside a glacial lake.
